Mastering Reading Comprehension Strategies

Reading Comprehension (RC) is more than just reading words; it's about understanding meaning, context, and authorial intent.

Understanding the Core of Reading Comprehension

Reading Comprehension (RC) is more than just reading words; it’s about understanding meaning, context, and authorial intent. Whether you’re facing the GMAT, GRE, SAT, LSAT, or any exam with critical reading sections, mastering RC is key.

Key Strategies for Success:

  1. Active Reading: Don’t just passively scan. Engage with the text. Ask questions, make notes (mental or physical), and summarize paragraphs as you go.

  2. Identify the Main Idea: Every passage has a central theme or argument. Practice pinpointing this quickly. It’s often found in the introductory or concluding paragraphs.

  3. Understand Passage Structure: How is the information organized? Is it cause-and-effect, compare-and-contrast, a chronological account, or an argument with supporting evidence? Recognizing the structure helps you anticipate where to find specific information.

  4. Focus on Author’s Tone and Purpose: Is the author arguing, explaining, criticizing, or merely informing? Understanding the tone and purpose helps interpret nuanced questions.

  5. Tackle Different Question Types:

    • Main Idea Questions: Ask about the overall theme.
    • Detail Questions: Require you to locate specific facts.
    • Inference Questions: Ask you to draw conclusions based on the text (what is implied but not explicitly stated).
    • Vocabulary-in-Context Questions: Test your understanding of how a word is used in the passage.
    • Purpose/Function Questions: Ask why the author included a particular detail or paragraph.

Test-Specific Considerations:

  • GMAT/GRE: Passages can be dense and cover diverse topics. Focus on logical structure and argumentation.
  • SAT: Often includes paired passages requiring comparison.
  • LSAT: Features extremely complex and abstract reasoning in its RC sections. Identifying assumptions and logical flaws is crucial.

Consistent practice with varied materials and a focus on these strategies will significantly improve your RC performance.
